Our Mission

The Massachusetts Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (MADRC) conducts extensive research, training and outreach programs. Our center has been at the forefront of dementia research and care since 1984.

To accomplish our important work, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) work closely together under the MADRC umbrella to support our goal of finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Our Work

The Outreach Recruitment and Engagement (ORE) Core supports MADRC by educating professionals and the public about the cutting-edge research happening at our center. Our work focusses on raising awareness about early detection, emphasizing the importance of receiving a medical diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and providing extensive resources for the public and medical professionals, like primary care physicians.

Our Leadership

Dr. Christine Ritchie is the Kenneth L. Minaker Endowed Chair in Geriatrics and Director of Research for the Division of Palliative Care and Geriatric Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She is a board-certified geriatrician and palliative care physician and conducts research focused on optimizing quality of life for those with chronic serious illness and multimorbidity. She directs the Mongan Institute Center for Aging and Serious Illness, which is designed to bring together researchers across MGH and the Boston community to improve the well-being of older adults and enhancing the lived experience of those with advanced illnesses, and the MGH Dementia Care Collaborative, which seeks to support persons living with dementia along with their caregivers, by providing tailored education, engaging in caregiver support and conducting research to improve care delivery. She co-directs the ORE Core of the MADRC and is a member of the NIA-funded IMPACT Collaboratory Patient and Caregiver Related Outcomes Core and IMPACT Steering Committee.

Dr. Ana-Maria Vranceanu is the David T. Rovee, PhD and Joanne V. Rovee Chair in Psychiatry and Co-Director of Mass General Neurosciences at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She is a clinical psychologist who develops, tests, and implements behavioral and lifestyle interventions for people with chronic illness and the family and friends who support them. She directs the Center for Health Outcomes and Interdisciplinary Research, which serves as a hub for training, education, service, and research focused on behavioral interventions across the lifespan in hospital and community settings. Dr. Vranceanu is the Co-Director of the Massachusetts Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core), the Massachusetts Center for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research in Minority Aging (Research and Education Core), and the Roybal Center for Dyadic Behavioral Interventions in Dementia.
