Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)

The following is an excerpt from the Partners HealthCare System Human Research Office website:  http://healthcare.partners.org/phsirb/aboutciti.htm

All investigators and research personnel participating in the conduct of human-subject research at Partners HealthCare Systems organizations must complete the Partners Human Research Committee-approved basic education program developed by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).  The CITI program was developed by experts in the IRB community and provides case-based learning of ethical concepts and regulations in a web-based learning environment.

Researchers and staff from are required to complete an initial CITI certification with completion of one of three basic course selections:  Biomedical, Social-Behavioral or Good Clinical Practice course. Each basic course contains approximately 16 modules and includes reading materials and a brief online quiz. The format is open-book - that is, one may refer back to the text at any time while taking the quiz, and the program allows one to leave and return to take the course at a later time, while saving one's place in the training process. The basic course takes between four and six hours to complete.

The CITI also offers case-based refresher courses for continuing education, and these take approximately one hour to complete. All researchers and staff at Partners HealthCare System organizations are required to complete the CITI refresher course every three years. The Good Clinical Practice course may be chosen as a refresher course to receive continuing education credits and will meet CITI re-certification rquirement.

The CITI program now offers a multi-language platform for courses to be displayed in Spanish and Portuguese. Please note that registrants who begin the online course but who do not log in again within 30 days will be deleted from the system and will need to re-register in order to continue the process.
